I've always admired the gambler - someone who sees money as so disposable that they throw all they have into a single toss of dice or hand of cards. I do not have that kind of whim. I prefer to use my money not to create more with risk, but rather to pursue other goals.

Upon the riverboat “Trepidation” in 1892, I came across this fine group of gentlemen playing a rousing game of stud poker while their colleagues looked on. They seemed to be so engrossed with the game, they hardly noticed my presence, apart from the one crocodilian visage that turned to me and kindly asked me to leave, ‘lest he be inclined to “bite my head clean off”…
